Fun With Sepsis.

Poor hand-washing likely led to spread of rare infection at Royal Alexandra Hospital

"Poor hand-washing rates in Edmonton and Alberta hospitals contributed to the spread of multi-drug-resistant bacteria that infected several people and likely played a part in the death of a Royal Alexandra Hospital patient.
"Joffe said Alberta Health Services is investigating why the originally infected traveller wasn’t immediately isolated in emergency and why hand-washing rates among staff at Edmonton hospitals is a dismal 43 per cent, compared to a provincial average of 50 per cent."

Come on, people, let's aim high. Let's shoot for the stellar average of 50%, not an abysmal 43%.

Fucking hospitals, man. In a study, the World Health Organization determined that in one year alone, "Hospital-acquired sepsis and pneumonia claimed 48,000 lives, led to 2.3 million extra patient-days in hospital and cost 8.1 billion dollars." All because people won't fucking wash their damn dirty hands. One doctor decreed that these infections "could be prevented by improving hygiene in clinical settings." YA THINK? Sweet feathery Jesus.

I have a great idea! Instead of a dismal 43%, or the you've-got-to-be-kidding-me average of 50%, let's really get crazy. Let's shoot for, I don't know, washing your hands 100% of the time?? 100% of the time you use the bathroom. 100% of the time you change diapers or wipe tiny butts. 100% of the time you pick your nose. 100% of the time you handle raw meat. 100% of the time your hands actually get grimy. 100% of the time you treat or touch patients at a doctor's office. 100% of the time your hands need washing, period. It's just not that hard. It's NOT THAT HARD.

Why can't people just wash their hands? Fuck 43%. Fuck 50%, for that matter. I hate people. I hate them in the face.

    2. I believe this is a regional/cultural divide. If you can fit your bubble suit in your suitcase then you can come down here to the land of the great unwashed (aka my home) and I will teach you how to say it.

But really, feel free to say it however you want! Cause I am laid back like that. I call her Toodles (em-FA-sis on the TOOOOO) most of the time, so this actually a moot point.

  2. Doctors should go back to doing housecalls. Instead of inviting every sick and immunity-challenged person in the area into one consolidated spot shared with those who have no infection but simply have open, gaping wounds, cancer, or newborn babies, just have the doctor go out to a house where he can come in, wash up, and address the specific illness in question. Raje.

  5. Agree w/ house calls being smart vrs. Hospitals. Agree that 50% is shamefully low rates for anyone, never mind freaking hospital staff who are touching me and my baby. Ahhhh.

    1. You are most welcome, Dr. Sumudu. I'm glad I could fill all the spaces in your knowledge. Is there, perchance, a reward waiting for me in a Nigerian bank account?

  7. Hi Jo! I do not understand the not-washing-your-hands thing at all. I've been especially aware of it since starting to work at a kindergarten with hundreds of slimy grimy gooey poo-y hands touching me everyday. BUT GUESS WHAT! I go to the restroom to wash my hands several times during my 3-hour workday, and guess what, none of the other teachers wash their hands when they leave the bathroom, none! How is this possible? I see them walk out of the stall, and just walk right out the door. What? First of all the don't wash their hands from all the slimy kid-hands, and they don't even wash their hands after using the toilet? I'm baffled. They also flush the toilet BEFORE they use it and not after, which is another one that I'm so confused about. Just had to share this with you. China bathroom etiquette gives me the heebies, and it makes me think of your blog. Is that weird? :)

    1. That is wild wacky stuff. I cannot begin to understand the reasoning behind flushing first and not after. ?? And the not washing hands is all too common, but so, so revolting. Sigh.
