Fun Friendly Phobic Fact Friday!

Ah, the casual, comfortable flip-flop: A symbol of summertime, an emblem of relaxation — and a harbinger of death?

93% of flip-flops worn over the course of a summer will end up with fecal matter on them. 20% will have E. Coli. Staph was also found. And "feces, urine, spit, vomit, animal droppings were all present." Furthermore, the film of grime (you know, the "tan line of dirt") that coats your feet at the end of a day of flip-flopping around town is some dangerous stuff, and if you happen to have a cut or open sore on your foot, you could actually be in danger of getting a serious infection.

So if you flip-flop, consider washing your feet upon arriving home, or do like I do and take an all-purpose Sani-Kids wipe to your grimy piggies.

  1. SO I was just in the bathroom, washing my hands like a good little girl, and I found myself wondering, "does Jo take off her rings whenever she washes/lotions/Purells her hands?" I've noticed that some ladies here at our office always taken off their rings while handwashing, etc (we keep a stockpile of Purell & hand lotion in our office bathroom). I typically don't take off my ring for handwashing or germ-x-ing, because I figure I might as well get my ring clean too...but I do take it off for hand lotion.

  2. I only ask because I know that with your compulsion, we know through your blog that you handwash/wipe/purell a LOT...so I wasn't sure which side of the "lazy f-er vs. OMGOCD" the ring thing fell under for you.

  3. Oh heck no, I leave my rings ON for sure. Because if you took them off after using the toilet, they'd never get clean. You'd be taking them OFF with dirty hands, then washing, then putting them back on, and they'd still have germs on them. And that makes my OCD alarm bells ring like cray-cray. So I def wash and Purell with rings on. I lotion with rings on too, I'm just careful to not get lotion too near the ring. It's not a huge deal though. I have a nice ring cleaner that I spray on and scrub with a tiny toothbrush and it sparkles it right up.

  4. Ooh, what ring cleaner do you use? I can get my ring cleaned for free where we bought it...at the mall...but UGH who wants to go to the mall unless they also have 5 other reasons to be at the mall?

  5. It's called Touch of Purple, and I bought it at a state fair years ago and still have some. It lasts forever. Here's their site: http://purplecleaner.com/

You can use it on a TON of other things, apparently, but I just use it on my ring and sometimes on my handheld mirror and my computer screen. Love that stuff. It makes my ring so incredibly sparkly.

You can also soak your ring in vodka to get gunk out of the nooks and crannies. I've done that a couple times, but what a waste of good vodka! snort.

I'm not sure. They look like one and the same? Anyway, that's the product name, Touch of Purple...
